Classroom Activities

It would be difficult to find a teacher who doesn't believe in the importance of reading for enjoyment.

But... most of our teaching and learning activities are high-stakes. Our curriculum is packed. Our time is limited. The idea of dedicating time in our classrooms for the simple pleasure of reading may seem impossible.

Below are a range of activities designed to help support students in developing their 'choosing skills'. I first learned about notion of 'choosing strategies' when I read the work of Dr Margaret K. Merga. You can find some of these references in the 'Further Reading' section of this website.

Most of these resources are intended to be discrete lessons. You can use them at the beginning of the school year, between units, for an end-of-week reprieve, at the conclusion of a term, or just when you can fit them in!
